The former president of Nagorno-Karabakh, Arkadi Googasian visited the students of Holy Martyrs on November 3, 2009, in order to promote the 2009 Armenia Telethon Fund, which will be benefiting the city Shushi this year. The ex-president also answered a number of questions which student had.

After a brief introduction to Karabagh and presentations organized by the students, a video was shown to the students, which included this year’s theme song for the Telethon and information as to why Shushi is in need of the Telethon’s donations. After enjoying the video, Mr. Googasian, who also fought in the Karabakh war against Azerbaijan, spoke to the students about the importance of Karabakh to the Armenian people and why it is our duty to help it.

He said that only we can shape our destiny, and no one else, referring to the infamous Protocols signed between Armenia and Turkey last month. Following his speech, students were given the opportunity to ask Mr. Googasian questions, many of which were geared towards the protocols and what they mean for the political and economic realm of the Republic of Armenia.

Googasian reassured the students that Armenia would be safe from all outside threats, and that President Sarkisian was not a traitor, but a human like us all, who made a mistake. He made clear his support for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the reparation of historical lands to Armenia, however. The students actively listened to all Mr. Googasian had to say, and participated eagerly in the program.

The Armenia Telethon will take place on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2009.
