Ferrahian High School Students had the opportunity once again this year, to participate in the University of California’s Model United Nations Conference, held at the university campus in Westwood, California. UCLA MUN attracts students from across the globes, who share a passion for diplomacy and international relations, and gives them the opportunity to show their knowledge of various international issues and topics, and debate about them in a fun and interactive environment.

This year, over 1500 delegates attended the conference, including Ferrahian High School students, who had the honor of representing the Republic of Armenia, as well as the countries of Norway, Venezuela, and Bangladesh. Students between the tenth and twelfth grades prepared months in advanced for the conference, doing extensive research and writing lengthy position papers about the various topics that were assigned to them. These included the situations in Cyprus and Myanmar, the prevention of future instances of genocide, and many, many more interesting topics. Model UN is an academic simulation of the United Nations, and is an excellent opportunity for students to develop debate, speaking, and research skills, as well as to learn extensively about pressing international issues, conflicts, and controversies. Ferrahian students have been participating in Model UN conferences for many years now, mainly due to the long and hard work of Miss Hourig Demirjian, Model UN coordinator and advisor, and Ferrahian Book Store Clerk.

UCLA MUN also gives students a firsthand look into college life, working in the school’s classrooms and exploring the campus when on breaks. Our students enthusiastically and proudly engaged the many problems the international community faces today, as well as enjoyed their stay there at UCLA. It was a small glimpse into life outside of high school for many students, and also gave them new outlooks on life, possibly opening new found interests based on the new things they had learned through Model UN.

Many students who participated in this year’s UCLA Conference will go on to participate in the UC Berkeley Model UN competition, which is held in Berkeley California. Congratulations to all participating students and we wish you the best of luck in your future Model UN competitions.
