Updated Assignments
(Friday July 29, 2011)
Please pay attention to the changes introduced in
the Summer Reading assignments.
Students are required to complete the following TWO
assignments during their summer break:
1. Required Book & Reading Journals: Each student
must complete
THREE
(PREVIOUSLY FIVE) Reading Journals by
choosing from the “Questions for Reading Journals”
handout (attached).
The journals must present information from the
beginning, middle, and end of the book. The student
must write a thoughtful response to the question by
providing specific evidence and examples from the
book to support his or her inferences. The response
should be typed, double spaced, and a minimum of 300
words. Students must provide a printed copy to the
teacher and save the original. Some teachers will
require students to submit their assignments to
TurnItIn.com at the beginning of the school year.
2. Newspaper Articles & Assignments: Each student
must read FOUR
(PREVIOUSLY) EIGHT newspaper articles
(print or online) on a variety of local, national,
or international topics, such as politics, business,
environment, technology, science, health, culture,
etc. Students are not allowed to read and write
about topics related to media, entertainment, or
sports.
For each article, students should write a 100-150
word summary and 100-150 word analysis. Follow the
attached “Newspaper Assignment” format and attach a
copy or printout of the article for each. All
assignments are due on Monday, August 22, 2011. No
late assignments will be accepted, unless the
student enrolled after August 1st.
The assignments will count for 10% of the first
quarter grade, which is worth about one letter
grade.
Extra
credit will be given to students, who
complete more than 3 journals and more than 4
article summary/analysis.
